Cyclone Curveball Hitting Tip
Hitting Tip: An effective way to quickly differentiate
between a fastball and a breaking pitch is to focus on the plain of the ball off the hand of the pitcher. A curve ball will typically rise above the hand of the pitcher after release while a fastball will be in line with or below the pitcher release point. This can be effectively practiced by focusing on the release point of the pitcher. Curve balls will rise above the release point (hand) while fastballs will not.

Mental ABC's of Pitching
SOME POINTERS FROM THE Book "The Mental ABC's Of Pitching," by H.A. Dorfman
------
* Be open to learning.
* Realize that what might have worked at one level might not at a
higher level.
* Give a newly acquired approach a fair amount of time to "kick in."
* Understand that learning implies CHANGE, and that change is not
immediately "comfortable."
* Learn about SOLUTIONS, rather than dwelling on the problem.
* Understand that in order to find out how to do something well, a
good learner takes RISKS, rather than being fearful of doing
something poorly.
THE ABOVE (POINTERS)can be applied for any baseball position and in life!!
Hitting- Broad & Fine Focus
"See the ball; hit the ball."
- Pete Rose
-----------
Wise words from one of the game's best hitters.
But just how and what is the best way to actually "see the ball."
Some Thoughts:
Your eyes are your guidance system, therefore, seeing the ball is, by far, the most important aspect of hitting. A hitter's eye disipline is much more important than whether he has 20/20 vision or wears corrective lenses.
Fear, Anxiety, Tension lead to muscular tightness and poor breathing. Concentration is effected which means that the eyes may react to irrevelant cues.
"I gotta/I'm gonna syndrome or self talk while the player is in this state of tightness interferes with the message of the hitter's eyes.
Thinking is an internal function
Seeing is an external function
Hitting is a physical function
When a hitter tries to handle more than one function at a time, he is dividing his attention.
Good hitters have consistant eye patterns.
Where, when and the type of focus they have.
Type of focus is either Broad (hitter first looks at a wide area on the pitcher, example: his chest) or Fine (hitter then looks at the pitcher's release point)
Tip: Don't view the release point (fine focus area) too soon. A hitter can only maintain his focus for a short period of time before there is a break in concentration. Most of the time, a broad fucus can be held four to five seconds, while a fine focus for two or three seconds. Hitters who keep their broad or fine focus too long may find themselves distracted, and they will lose that sharp picture of the ball.
Hitters find there is a rhythm for their eyes that is just right for them, and that moving from broad to fine focus is more effective than just tuning right in to a fine focus.
-----------
In summary:
Try to block everything out of your mind just prior to the pitch except concentrating on first your broad focus and then your fine focus. & Breathe!!!!!!

Defensive Communication
While on defense:
Remember to- COMMUNICATE EARLY, OFTEN AND WITH ENTHUSIASM
WHAT DO COACHES LOOK FOR WHEN THEY COME TO A GAME
A: There are five skills coaches look for in players: running, fielding, throwing, hitting and hitting for power. Coaches also look for attitude, approach to the game, reaction to game situations, and reaction to success/failure. Just because you do or do not have all five skills listed above, that will not necessarily help or limit your opportunities at being recruited or drafted. It is very rare for players to be strong in all five skill areas. Natural talent and ability allow for some players to be stronger in certain areas over others. However, the other non-skill areas may be what makes or breaks a player when it comes to offers. Coaches want players with good attitudes and good reactions. No one is ever perfect and how a player reacts to mistakes is very important. Mistakes only escalate with bad reactions. If you swing and miss at a ball or strike out, a coach may look to see if you shake your head and walk away, mutter profanities, or if you take a deep breath and continue. The same is true with pre-game. Some coaches only stay for infield practice because that may be all it takes for them to decide if a prospect is worth pursuing. During pre-game, a player is guaranteed to get five or six balls hit to them in a ten-minute period, whereas that same player may go an entire game without getting a single ball hit to them. In ten minutes, a coach can see an entire team’s skills and attitudes.
When it comes to hitting, there are four things a coach specifically looks for: a ground out, a fly out, a strike out and a base hit. A ground out allows a coach to get your home to first time. A fly out shows heart and hustle (do you run the ball out every time or do you walk back to the dugout before the ball’s even caught). A strike out shows reaction to failure. Remember, everyone fails, but when it happens to you, do you argue with the umpire on the call, do you throw your bat, do you say profanities or do you keep your head up? Finally, a base hit shows how you run the bases and how you react to success. Coaches don’t want to see cockiness. It’s great when you get a hit, especially in a crucial situation, but remember to be happy, not cocky or conceited.
